It began, as many things do, with the best of intent. Back in the way back, when mass communication became a reality in North America, rules, guidelines, and parameters were established to insure this amazing, unprecedented capability was properly administered for the good of the “people.” For that reason, the “airwaves” have since been deemed owned by those “people,” outside the grasp of corporate entities considered not trust worthy. It all sounds good on paper, but the reality has proven the fears. Today, television, radio, and cable networks rule. Owned by a dwindling number of mega-operators, media here is now a closed shop. But for the internet. These early days of this new medium are as monumental as was radio’s birth, and indeed it was protected at inception by the ideals and language adopted for its preceding media sisters; but that promise is under threat. Charles Sullivan is an American freelance writer, photographer, and social justice activist involved with savetheinternet.com and itsournet.org, both organizations working to defeat tabled legislation in America that promised to do for the internet what weakened broadcast legislation has accomplished in other media. Charles Sullivan in the first half.

And, in the second half, author, journalist, and activist, Norman Solomon asks: “What would we say if, in our own community, the police force killed shoppers every day by spraying blocks of stores with machine-gun fire -- while explaining that the action was justifiable because no innocents were targeted and their deaths were an unfortunate necessity in the war on crime?” Everyday in the ever burgeoning occupied zones necessary for the prosecution of the ‘Global War on Terror,’ civilians are routinely erased. “Regrettable” says their killers, but the killing continues. Norman Solomon is a the Executive Director of the Institute for Public Accuracy. Some titles among his many books include: ‘Target Iraq: What the News Media Didn’t Tell You,’ co-authored with foreign correspondent, Reese Erlich, ‘Wizards of Media Oz,’ ‘The Habits of a Highly Deceptive Media,’ and , ‘The Power of Babble.’ His latest is, ‘War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death.’ Norman Solomon and the casual costs of “collateral damage” in the second half.

And, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with all that’s good to do in and around Victoria this week. But first, Charles Sullivan, and minding the Networks.
