C. L. Cook

Democracy has suffered a precipitous decline since the ascension of George W. Bush, both within the self-anointed homeland of modern western democracy, where constitutional freedoms and guarantees have been eroded and in some case abandoned entirely, and abroad, where sham elections are manipulated by the great powers, and legitimately elected governments go unrecognized, or are overthrown.

Last week, after suffering nearly two years of an illegal regime, the Haitian people finally got their chance to vote. But, it seems their choice of a new government is as unacceptable to the great paragons of the democratic ideal as was the previously government. Anthony Fenton is a Canadian freelance journalist who has reported extensively on the Haitian situation.

And; Humanity is today at a crossroads. It is up to this generation to make the hard choices that will shape the future world, choices that may determine whether our species survives at all. One of the greatest threats we face, contends Professor Arthur Clark, co-founder of the organization ‘CANDIL’ (Canada, Democracy, and International Law) is militant nationalism, a quickening trend seen around the world today. Dr. Clark will present ‘Beyond Militarism: Choosing the Future’ this Wednesday at UVic.

And; Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with all that’s good to do in and around Victoria this week.

But first, Anthony Fenton and Haiti’s clouded future.
